Dimplex North America recently announced a voluntary recall of plug-in remote control receivers which were included with various Dimplex electric fireplaces between 1998 and 2008. Replacements will be provided to customers free of charge. With recent news the Toyota recalls, your first assumption might be that the company was in some way negligent in the manufacturing process to save money and/or attempted to hide the issue after it was discovered. In my opinion, Dimplex is a very responsible organization with an excellent reputation based on careful engineering, product development and manufacture.

The remote control receivers involved in this Dimplex recall were Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) approved. UL is an “Independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization. UL tests products for public safety. We are all used to seeing the familiar ‘UL Approved’ insignia on the electric products we use. I can only assume that something within the receivers later developed issues that were not foreseen during the rigorous testing and approval process from UL.

I have visited the North American headquarters of Dimplex several times and have a very positive impression of company management and their dedication to quality control and customer service. I am satisfied that the company acted responsibly by choosing to volunteer for this Dimplex recall. Dimplex has put together a very simple process for distributing new receivers. If you are the owner of an electric fireplace that utilizes a receiver included in the recall, just complete a short form to receive a free replacement for your Dimplex remote control. In the meantime, consumers are advised to simply stop using the remote receiver and plug the fireplace directly into the wall instead of the remote’s wall unit.
