We realize there’s nothing quite like the sound of a crackling, blazing fire to create a warm and inviting space. However, there are downsides to a traditional wood burning fireplaces. Wood burning fireplaces by nature are not very efficient. They pull warm air out of a room and into a fire. A lot of the energy [heat] is lost up the chimney and through the material that surrounds it. When temperatures drop below freezing, a fireplace exhausts more energy than it creates. The Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association rate older fireplaces efficiency as 5-10%.

My wife Polly and I bought my grandmother’s house in Cos Cob, CT 14 years ago. Over the years we have been slowly updating the rooms.
